CUPERTINO, Calif., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- California's Apple Computer Co. said Thursday it was recalling 1.1 million battery packs because the lithium-ion batteries may overheat.
Such overheating may pose a fire hazard to consumers, Apple said. Apple has received nine reports of batteries overheating, including two reports of minor burns from handling overheated computers and other reports of minor property damage. No serious injuries were reported.
The recalled batteries, made by Sony Energy Devices Corp., were used in 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4.
Consumers should remove the battery from the computer to view the model and serial numbers labeled on the bottom of the unit.
Consumers should stop using the recalled batteries immediately and contact Apple to arrange for a replacement battery, free of charge. After removing the recalled battery from their iBook or PowerBook, consumers should plug in the AC adapter to power the computer until a replacement battery arrives.
Questions may be directed to Apple at 800-275-2273.
TOKYO [AP] — Tokyo's subway authority will allow a station advertisement featuring a nude and pregnant Britney Spears, officials said Thursday, dropping an earlier plan to censor the photo.
HB Japan Inc., publisher of the Japanese edition of Harper's Bazaar, plans to rent ad space at the posh Omotesando station next week to promote its October issue with Spears posing naked on the cover.
The ad, in which Spears bares her belly but covers her breasts with her hands, is the same one used in the August issue of the magazine's U.S. edition. The 24-year-old pop star is pregnant with her second child.
Tokyo Metro Co.'s obscenity screening team had initially raised objections to the nudity and asked HB Japan to modify the photograph during negotiations last month.
The publisher reluctantly agreed to blacken out the image from the waist down — covering most of the singer's belly and thighs — but had planned to write in the black space: "in this place we are not allowed to exercise the same level of freedom of expression as the original Harper's Bazaar."
But on Thursday, Tokyo Metro said it would allow full presentation of the photo as an exception to its obscenity rule, saying it understood the publisher's intention was to portray a happy mother — not to be sexually explicit.
The magazine's deputy chief editor, Kayoko Higashino, welcomed the move. "I'm glad the subway officials understood the meaning of the photo," she said.
Before the reversal, Higashino had called the restriction "ridiculous," saying Spears would look "like a chubby woman" and not someone who is pregnant.
In principle, nudity is not accepted in ads in subway cars and stations, said Tokyo Metro spokesman Tatsuya Edakubo.
"Our earlier request to cover the photo from the waist down was because of nudity, not because we had anything against pregnant women," he said, adding that officials later decided that censoring the photo would be inappropriate.
The Omotesando display will include 50 posters for the fashion magazine, five of them of Spears.
[Miami-Herald] - Police continue to search for a man who burned down an adult bookstore in Miami after watching a pornographic film this month.
Video surveillance from the bookstore, located at 7455 SW 40th St., shows the suspect requesting change from the clerk and then entering a small booth to watch the movie.
After the viewing, the man told the clerk he had a guilty conscience, police said. He then doused the store with liquid, ignited it and calmly walked out.
The ordeal took place on Aug. 12 at about 3 a.m., police said.

LONDON (Reuters) - A Home Office radio spot advertising a web site telling children how to stay safe online has been banned in a mix-up over links to pornography.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled the ad should not be broadcast again in its current form after receiving a complaint from a listener when it was aired in March.
The problem arose over the spelling of the Web site, www. thinkuknow.co.uk. The listener had called up thinkyouknow.co.uk -- with an extra "y" and "o" -- and had found that site contained links to adult material.
The ASA said: "Although we recognized that there was no intention, we considered that a significant effect of the ad had been to indirectly publicize services which were unacceptable for broadcast: namely restricted adult material and other sexual services."
The Home Office/Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center (CEOP) advert was broadcast on 96 Trent FM with the message "what you say online isn't always what a pedophile hears. Giving out personal information could let a pedophile track you down."
CEOP told the standards authority it was aware of the potential for error but believed teenagers were accustomed to using abbreviations such as "u" in text messages and e-mails.
It noted that the inappropriate material on the other site was at least four clicks away from the home page and that by then any user would have realized they had made a mistake.
BEIJING (Reuters) - Striptease send-offs at funerals may become a thing of the past in east China after five people were arrested for organizing the intimate farewells, state media reported on Wednesday.
Police swooped last week after two groups of strippers gave "obscene performances" at a farmer's funeral in Donghai County, Jiangsu province, Xinhua news agency said.
The disrobing served a higher purpose, the report noted.
"Striptease used to be a common practice at funerals in Donghai's rural areas to allure viewers," it said. "Local villagers believe that the more people who attend the funeral, the more the dead person is honored."
Wealthy families often employed two troupes of performers to attract a crowd. Two hundred showed up at last week's funeral.
Five strippers were detained and local officials "issued notices concerning funeral management," Xinhua said.
Now village officials must submit plans for funerals within 12 hours after a villager dies. And residents can report "funeral misdeeds" on a hotline, the report said.
SAN JOSE CA (UPI) -- The city of San Jose, Calif., will pay the Hell's Angels motorcycle club almost $800,000 in damages for shooting three members' dogs during a police raid.
The settlement closes a 1999 lawsuit against the city by the club and 10 people associated with a strip club where the shootings occurred in January 1998 as part of a murder investigation, KTVU-TV, San Jose reported.
In the suit, club attorney Karen Snell argued the shootings were an unconstitutional taking of property because police knew the dogs were at the raid locations and took no steps to restrain or capture them.
"They were beloved pets. They were very, very close to the families and the families were devastated," Snell said.
Earlier this year, Santa Clara County paid $990,000 to settle their share of liability in the lawsuit.
The suit went to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2005, but the court refused to hear it, in effect ruling for the Hell's Angels.

TOKYO (UPI) -- A subway network operator has ordered a Japanese publisher to censor a nude photo of Britney Spears that is part of an advertisement in a Tokyo subway station.
The Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun reported the picture of the pop singer, which is from the cover of the Harper's Bazaar October issue, will be censored by HB Japan, Inc. after the Tokyo Metro Co. complained the advertisement was inappropriate.
The photo, which shows Spears nude and pregnant, will now be covered from the stomach down as part of a settlement between the two companies regarding the photo's message and its alleged inappropriate nature.
"We apologize for covering part of the image of a beautiful future mother," the now edited version of the photo reads. "In this place, we can't show the same image (as the magazine), so we made the change."
The advertisement is one of six that HB Japan planned to use at Omotesando Subway Station to celebrate its sixth anniversary of publishing the Japanese edition of Harper's Bazaar, the paper said.
